The National State Nature Park of Katonkaragay was founded on the 17th of July 2001 by the decision of the Government of Kazakhstan for the purposes of preserving and examining the landscape of the Southern Altai, and preserving the parts and objects of natural and cultural legacy, for conducting researches and organizing conditions of environment, organizing ecotourism.
It is situated on the Central Altai physiographic province in the boundary of Katonkaragay administrative region in East Kazakhstan.
